The connotative meaning of the word Mwari has changed overtime to suit Christianity. In the days gone by, from as late as 1923, some Xtian denominations resisted the use of the word Mwari to denote the biblical God.
Monsignor Brown even labelled the word Mwari to be of “evil connotation”. However as Christianity faced resistance from the Shona people, missionaries were forced to adopt this “heathen word”(as they once called it) and make it Christian.
Thus today, the connotative meaning of the word Mwari has changed. Mwari, in the past, has always been a Shona God associated with Vadzimu, ancestral spirits.
